Jesus Pobre

Jesus Pobre is a traditional Spanish village with modern day facilities that is conveniently situated between the coastal towns of Denia and Javea that retains a bygone country feel yet is only minutes away from the 5 star Marriott Spar Hotel and the La Sella Golf Course.

This small village with its narrow streets, traditional townhouses and pleasing modern urbanization is dominated by the Montgo Mountain and National Park Area. It is hidden among the beautiful woodlands and flat valley that spreads towards the sea with orange, almond and olives trees.

It is believed that the city got its name due o the image of Jesus Pobre. The image is still saved in one of its churches since ancient times. The city is especially known for large numbers of its churches and the ancient buildings that are still there. Father Peter is supposed to be behind the foundation of current city. The main source of income for most citizens of the town is agriculture. Mainly, almond, carob and olive trees are grown on the agricultural lands. Also you can find grape vines in abundance in this town. The town has a weekly Farmers’ Market where locally produced products and baked goods are sold.

The Sunday market in Jesus Pobre

The Sunday Market in Jesus Pobre ( El Mercado del Riurau ) develops around an existing structure known as riurau. The riuraus are rural constructions characteristic of the Marina Alta, with the function to allow the drying of the raisins from the grapes that, arranged over hurdles, received the warm prevailing winds and were protected from the dew of the night until going dry like a raisin.

The market is a meeting place where you can get to know farmers, bakers, artisans and creatives who show their product without intermediaries. You can find here fruits and vegetables, honey and wine, meat and cheese specialties, baked delicacies – all of them coming from the land around Jesús Pobre.

The sunday market of local products and handicrafts was established here in 2013, and it is being held each Sunday. The stalls vary, changing every Sunday, so the products are different, except for those that you can find inside the building of the riurau, which are the same.
